1. What Changes are there to my DOS Headmaster data in the new Windows Headmaster Gold©?

There is no provision for editing teacher data in Headmaster Gold©. You will enter teachers in your student demographic database with a prefix such as 80 then capture the teachers from this database. This allows for much greater flexibility and control over teacher data. Anything that you can do with a student record (schedule, mailing labels, transcript) you may also do with a teacher record. In this database, the field Counselor becomes the teacher's sort abbreviation, and Homeroom becomes the teacher's prefix (Mr., Mrs., Ms).

In the User Window tab you will need to redefine any user-defined fields from the old database. Double clock the desired edit window, and complete the Name, Style, (date, phone, etc.), and Size (number of characters) to exactly match your DOS setup.

In the Dates tab you must redefine your immunization setup to exactly match your DOS setup. Double click on each date field and enter the Name (MMR, Polio) of the selected date. You may also arrange the screen to suit your eye or data entry needs. Since these dates may now be placed individually on a custom report, there is no longer a need for different stickers.

All reports are now stored in a Rich Text Format (rtf). The DOS reports are not compatible with the Gold version, although they can still be generated with the DOS version.

2 .My computer crashed while I was working in Headmaster Gold© and now I get an ‘Access Denied” message when I try to get back in.

This is because Headmaster Gold© closed without writing to the file that tracks users and application usage when your computer crashed. The only way to recover from something like this is to...

  1. Be sure everyone is out of Headmaster Gold©.
  2. Browse to the drive where your Headmaster Gold© data resides. (i.e. “app path\hdmstr\data” or “app path\data”)
  3. Find a file called winbusy.dta in the \data directory and delete it.
  4. You may now log in to Headmaster Gold©.

3. My report (class lists) contains bookmarks, but the bookmarks don’t fill when I preview a report and print it.

That is because the custom report generator in Headmaster Gold© fills the bookmarks with information as the report is being sent to the printer. After previewing the report in Headmaster Gold©, simply go to the ‘print report’ tab in the custom report generator.Take the check mark out of the box beside ‘test mode’ and run your report again.Your report should now contain the information in the place of the bookmarks, as you expected.
